Designed along renaissance lines, San Jose Church in the heart of Iloilo City evokes images of Italy rather than of colonial Spain. Completed towards the end of the 19th century, its soaring height is emphasized by two symmetrical belfries in quadrilateral format, highlighted by a balustrade on the fourth level (a feature that distinguishes this church from typical baroque churches in the country). Inside, more of the renaissance inspiration can be gleaned from the tall Corinthian columns running along the nave. The gilded retablo carries some gothic and Byzantine touches.
The Church of San Jose is one of the few remaining Augustinian designed and constructed churches in the country that remain under the administration of the order.
